How do I register my boat? Registration, registration cards, regulations, chartering… it’s not always clear. So what should you do with a small boat from Ateliers de La Gazelle des Sables?

Why register my boat?

The most important thing to remember: registering your pleasure boat enables the authorities to ensure that your boat complies with safety regulations. This involves assigning a number to your boat so that it can be identified.

This means that registration can be refused for a boat that doesn’t meet regulatory expectations.

And that’s where it gets interesting…

To be registered, a boat must be accompanied by an ULTRA IMPORTANT document: the Written Declaration of Conformity , which commits the manufacturer to comply with CE standards.

Simply put: No CE Marking = No Written Declaration of Conformity = No Registration = No Right to Sail

Make no mistake about it: whatever the level of build quality, registering a boat built without the highest professional standards can quickly become a nightmare… and one that insurance companies are quick to point out. Better to avoid it! The commitment of the pros is your guarantee of safety at sea and peace of mind ashore.

Which boats must be CE marked?

Since June 16, 1998, all pleasure boats from 2.50 to 24 meters, whether new or not, intended for leisure or sports boating, at sea or on inland waterways, placed on the French or European Union market for the first time, must bear the “CE” mark.

Consequently, any boat over 2.5 metres in length must systematically be associated with :

  1. Written Declaration of Conformity
  2. His Owner’s Manual
  3. A manufacturer’s plate mounted inside the cockpit, clearly visible in the event of an inspection at sea.
  4. Its identification number, a.k.a. its HIN or CIN number, fixed to the starboard stern.

And here we come back to the pro’s commitment: to establish this number, the boat builder has to apply for his ‘manufacturer’s code’… which is only issued to manufacturers of boats subject to CE marking.

We’ve come full circle: CE marking is a FON-DA-MEN-TAL criterion for those who want to sail with peace of mind, free from administrative or other hassles.

The government website brings together official information: Regulations for leisure and sports boats

Patrick, the father of the boats, explains: “All our boats over 2.50 meters in length are CE marked, of course, to certify their compliance with strict safety requirements.

As for our little Loustic, which is absolutely impossible to sink, it too meets a number of compliance requirements. But at only 2.33 metres long, it is not subject to these regulations. Which is why it’s called a “beach craft” or “tender”… And yet, of course, it receives just as much care as its big brothers and sisters.

Do I have to write the registration number on the hull?

Good news for French yachtsmen! With boats from Ateliers de La Gazelle des Sables, there’s no need to mark your hull. She’s so beautiful just as she is!

Please note: in other EU countries, this may be mandatory.
