Taking out insurance for your small sailboat or motorboat is not (yet) compulsory.
Civil liability
Dinghies, tenders and water sports equipment are sometimes insured as part of a home insurance policy: a simple declaration will suffice. This is an opportunity to study the fine print of your policy and the third-party liability coverage.
Material damage or bodily injury caused to third parties is covered by this Civil Liability.
Please note that family members are not always considered third parties by insurers.
In other words, the insurer only covers you for damage caused to another boat.
Third-party liability may apply if you lend your pleasure boat or entrust the helm to a crewmate. The general and special conditions of your home insurance contract are worth examining.
What guarantees does boat insurance provide?
For damage to the boat :
Depending on the ceilings and deductibles specified, this coverage reimburses both small and large accidents, even those caused alone.
Theft, vandalism :
If your boat is stolen or vandalized, again check your limits and deductibles.
What about the trailer?
Here too, we recommend that you declare the chassis number of your trailer to your car insurance company. Are you insured for this type of driving? Is the trailer insured against theft? And what about the goods being transported? These are all questions that should be discussed with a specialist in the field.

Prized by bad intentions: all road trailers, whatever their size, model or gauge. Make sure you’re well protected.
What about La Gazelle des Sables’ workshops?
Since 2005, with several hundred boats behind us, experience speaks for itself. There has only been one case of theft/vandalism on a boat: Lascar du Toul’Ru, Gazelle des Iles, Morgat, Gazelle des Sables, De L’Orchère … all easily distinguishable. How daring would it be to steal such a beautiful boat? Difficult to conceal and to get out discreetly – you’ve all experienced it! Impossible to get out without being noticed, such is the elegance and charm.
What’s more, the upkeep and maintenance of a small sailboat at Ateliers de La Gazelle des Sables can’t compare with the industry’s ratio. A broken ring? a trailer fire? even in the case of an unusual incident, the comparison doesn’t hold.
… Perhaps it’s because of these interesting arguments that some insurers offer very attractive terms for theft/vandalism boat insurance for a Gazelle des Iles or her siblings. Depending on what they say, the range is between €80 and €200 a year. All in all, a reasonable cost for your peace of mind.

Gazelle des Iles, De L’Orchère, Morgat 320… no need to try to go unnoticed!
Insuring your boat’s trailer
On the other hand, your road trailer is precious: turn your back and it’s gone. Before you do anything else, take a look at our recommendations on ‘How to avoid trailer theft‘.
And here again, be sure to analyze your insurance contracts with your usual contacts… there’s no point in being insured twice for the same need!
